Having New Year's resolutions is something that belongs to every new year, and most people know the saying "new year, new opportunities." The new year can definitely offer new opportunities to create new habits, quit a bad habit, or learn something new. At the same time, almost everyone knows the feeling of setting a number of goals for the new year without being able to follow up on them. New Year's resolutions themselves can be both motivating and work well to create new habits, but it requires that they are followed. Three things to avoid when making New Year's resolutions

1. Setting too many goals

This is a classic pitfall, as one sees the new year as an opportunity to achieve everything that was not accomplished in the past year. But having too many goals often makes them unclear and difficult to carry out in practice. Therefore, one should pick one to two goals to focus on.

2. Making goals based on things you don’t actually want

Another common pitfall is setting goals that are not aligned with what you like, who you are, and what you enjoy. Although the new year offers opportunities, you will not wake up as a new person the moment the year turns. Therefore, it is very important to create goals based on what you truly believe in and want to accomplish. An example is if you want to eat less meat but really love eating meat – it will be difficult to carry out if you set the New Year's resolution to become a vegetarian. A simpler and clearer goal could be to eat meat-free meals one to two days a week instead.

3. Not implementing the goals into everyday life

This is perhaps the most important pitfall to avoid. It is incredibly important to break down New Year's resolutions into small goals you can achieve in everyday life. Then you can follow the progress and adjust the goals if you have set them too big or too difficult.

Therefore, the most important tip is to keep going if motivation drops and work on the subgoals at the same time as having the big goal or New Year's resolution as a motivator.
